Wilderness survival

March 14, 2007

survival.gif…our own version of “Survivor”! Here are the details for our camping trip this weekend:

  1. We will leave from Colonel Tom Parson’s at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Plan to be there by 5:30 to help load the trailer and prepare.
  2. This is a wilderness survival campout – Scouts can bring a bag of trail mix to supplement the menu.
  3. We will return by 10:30 a.m. on Sunday.
  4. You can bring fishing hooks and 10 feet of line for the weekend – Scouts will make their own poles.
  5. We will campout at either Coopers Farm or Carol Pond. Scoutmaster Michael Ervin will determine the location and send an email.
  6. Visit merit badge.com and review the requirements for the Wilderness Survival Merit Badge. Scouts will be sleeping in a lean to and starting a fire with flint and steel. Scouts need a ground cloth (6’x8’ is the maximum) and a sleeping bag for sleeping out overnight.

Chilling Out

February 19, 2007

The troop went cold-weather camping in Greenbelt Park in the Washington, DC area on February 16th-18th.  Fourteen Scouts and eight parents braved the elements.  Visits to monuments included the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, the World War II Memorial, the Korean War Memorial, and the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum.

Nightly temperatures dipped to single-digit territory.  In addition to the temperature challenge, snow topped by 3 inches of ice blanketed the ground.

The gallery is posted here.  The troop leaders were relieved that no Scout was lost in subterranean wilderness (the Metro).
